big, little and blue

I love the contrast of the small fishing boat against the large ship as it slowly moves across the horizon. I am taking in all this blue as we prepare to pack bags and head home for the holidays. And that blue is something powerful. Being down on the rocks this morning, so sunny and peaceful and overwhelmingly blue, I was able to relax and let all thoughts about the upcoming travels slip away from me. The mesmerizing effect of the morning stayed with me all day, through an impromptu family lunch chez nous and the usual afternoon/evening routine. Now if I can keep those sweet blue dreams with me tonight and every night to get me through the next few days one calm step at a time I will really believe in the power of blue.

pilot for a day...

Family day at the Guardia Costiera (Coast Guard) base here in Catania is the best thing I've done in a while. I think the 2 year old would agree. After having the freedom to run through the hangar, playing 'pilot' in the helicopters and small planes, we got to climb aboard a larger plane with a few other coast guard families and their kids for the real deal. This was a special flight to Taormina and back, a quick jaunt with the pros. What made this so fun was the freedom we had on board to move around, look out the windows, sit on the pilot's lap (my son, that is!), have fun with the kids, and take in all the breathtaking views of the coastline. The plane flew low so it was easy to pick out all the well-known landmarks--of course Aci Castello's castle, and even our house. From my few seconds in the cockpit I had an unreal sense of all this beauty surrounding me, and I couldn't help but think this might be one of the best places in the world to be a pilot. Thank you Isabella and Giuseppe for an incredible day. The little 'pilota' is still talking about the experience and I will surely treasure the memory of this truly unique day.

December scenes

Between working, creative projects, holidays, motherhood, there has been little time for blogging. Partly it is this gorgeous weather. Whenever there is free time, it has been much more appealing to unglue myself from the computer and head outdoors. At least these photos can give you a little idea of what we've been up to! More scenes from Ognina and the clouds above Riposto.
