pilot for a day...

Family day at the Guardia Costiera (Coast Guard) base here in Catania is the best thing I've done in a while. I think the 2 year old would agree. After having the freedom to run through the hangar, playing 'pilot' in the helicopters and small planes, we got to climb aboard a larger plane with a few other coast guard families and their kids for the real deal. This was a special flight to Taormina and back, a quick jaunt with the pros. What made this so fun was the freedom we had on board to move around, look out the windows, sit on the pilot's lap (my son, that is!), have fun with the kids, and take in all the breathtaking views of the coastline. The plane flew low so it was easy to pick out all the well-known landmarks--of course Aci Castello's castle, and even our house. From my few seconds in the cockpit I had an unreal sense of all this beauty surrounding me, and I couldn't help but think this might be one of the best places in the world to be a pilot. Thank you Isabella and Giuseppe for an incredible day. The little 'pilota' is still talking about the experience and I will surely treasure the memory of this truly unique day.
